Rising Sun
Different eyes and skin
Mock me from the mirror’s light
Enemy am I.

Dec 7, 1941

Today my life changed forever . . . I am no longer considered American, but by shear heritage I am now the hated enemy . . .

The lives of Kenji and Aiko Onishi and their American-born children are about to unravel when the United States is thrust into war with Japan. Confronted by insurmountable prejudice and fear, the family is ripped from their California home without just cause by the American government and sent to an assembly center “for their own protection.”

Forced to live in deplorable circumstances, every aspect of their lives regulated and controlled, the Onishi’s freedoms are stripped from their grasp as they struggle to survive behind barbed wire. It isn’t long before the mind-numbing confinement and feelings of helplessness begin to pit the family against one another.

When sent to a relocation camp in the center of the Utah desert, they’re beset by ever increasing emotional and physical challenges, and Aiko is faced with her greatest yet: to mend the broken spirits of her family, or risk losing them forever. Based on true and tragic events that transpired during World War II, Rising Sun, Falling Star is a heart-rending story of one family’s struggle to survive uncalculated loss and emotional destruction.

Meri felt a shiver run down her spine at the sight of the armed men. What slight infraction would cause them to use their weapons? Following her parents, Meri stepped from the bus, trying to keep her focus straight ahead. Her mother shielded her hat with her handbag in a vain attempt to ward off the rain, though its long pheasant feather drooped with the weight of the water.

Meri kept a wary eye on the soldiers and then allowed herself to scan her surroundings. Ahead lay the racetrack and the grandstand. Her mouth fell open. It was the Tanforan Racetrack. Soldiers began shouting orders to separate the males and females. Meri felt a shimmer of panic as she gripped her mother’s hand and was led away from her father and brothers.

Soaked to the bone, Meri and her mother fell in line with the others, her eyes darting about while her heart filled with trepidation. They filed into a large room and were ordered to strip off their wet clothes.

Meri looked at her mother in horror. “Mama,” she whispered, “we’ll be naked.”

Aiko gave her daughter a sympathetic look. For Meri, it was a mortifying thought. Even after gymnastics at school, the girls had some privacy for showers and dressing. She was never naked at home, except in the solitude of her own room or the bathroom. She’d never even seen her mother naked. Meri wanted to crawl beneath the benches that lined the walls, or pull up a floor plank and disappear into the sour earth below.

Of Angels and Orphans by Barbara T. Cerny

Audra Markham is a ten-year-old girl born into privilege, but only in the sense of wealth. The granddaughter of a Viscount, Audra is the object of ridicule in her spoiled and spiteful family. Alone and unloved, Audra seeks solace in the comfort of food.

In another part of London thirteen-year-old Nathaniel Abbot lives a wretched life, forced to steal food in order to survive. Living in squalid conditions at the local orphanage, Nathaniel and three of his friends are spared further suffering when Audra “rescues” them from their plight.

Two lost souls that cannot find their place in the word suddenly find a place in each other’s hearts. Follow the lives of Audra and Nate as they grow from loyal childhood companions to inseparable young lovers, struggling through the perils of their own lives and facing difficult decisions that threaten to keep them apart.

Genre: Historical Romance

At midnight, Audra finally felt the house settled enough that she arose from the bed, put on her clothes (God forbid if she was caught in her nightgown), and silently walked down the hallway to the stairs. Her knees were a little shaky but she couldn’t tell if that was from fear or from weakness. Not willing to take chances, she sat down on the top step and moved down the stairs one at a time on her butt, scooting slowly down to the bottom. So far, so good. All those years of sneaking food and clothing for the boys were paying off!

The back staircase emptied out into the breezeway. If she went straight, she’d end up in the stables; if she turned around, she would go back into the kitchens. Glancing around to make sure she was alone, she began her trek across the breezeway and into the stables. The door seemed heavier than usual, and she struggled to keep silent. Once through the door, she stood on the other side of it to catch her breath. Her legs were very shaky now but she was too close to stop. Ahead of her were the narrow stairs up to the loft area and Nate’s room.

This time, she crawled on her hands and knees up the stairs, hiking her skirts up so they wouldn’t be caught. This would the worst place to be seen with her bare legs showing and her skirt hitched up around her waist! She grinned at the picture she must make from the bottom of the stairs—at least her undergarments were clean!

Audra finally made it to the top and had to stop for a minute to catch her breath. Then she stood up and went to Nate’s room. Like before, Calvin had moved out to keep from disturbing Nate with his horrible snoring. Audra confirmed this with a glance to the empty bed and swiftly moved to Nate’s side. The chair was on the opposite side of the bed this time as his back was facing the door.

Audra went around the bed and kneeled next to his head. He lay there with both arms on his pillow, keeping them from touching the wounds on his side. Even in his sleep, his brow was furrowed in pain, his eyes tightly shut, his breathing ragged and shallow. His mouth was slightly open and he was making those little mewling noises she remembered from last time, as if he labored through his breathing and the movement hurt him.

She reached out and brushed his hair away from his forehead and checked his temperature by putting the back of her hand to his temple. He seemed okay. She stared at his face in the dark trying to make out each of his handsome features in the inky blackness. A little light came from the window over his bed, but the moon was in quarter and not much help. She was afraid to light a candle and draw attention to the room.

Audra put her hands in-between and over his, content to just kneel there and hold his hands. His breathing changed slightly, seeming to calm a bit for the next few minutes. As she lifted her hand to stroke his hair again, Nate opened his eyes.

“I knew you were here,” he whispered, pain coming through his voice, “I could feel you.”

An Unexpected Adventure by D. X. Dunn

When ten-year old Christopher Knight gets an email from his best friend, now living two hundred miles away, he has no idea that it holds the key to another world. The two friends unexpectedly find themselves in the magical kingdom of Distania. There they must face a raging river, dragons, a mysterious prince and an angry king; and they need to get home in time for dinner!

“Which way should we go, then?”  Chris spoke more to himself than to his friend.

The boys surveyed the landscape again.  A large group of trees in the distance caught their eyes.  Neither of them could remember seeing the trees only a few minutes earlier.

“How about towards the trees?” Chris asked Alex, not wanting to mention that he hadn’t noticed them before.

“Yeah, sounds good.”  Alex gave his head a shake and then rubbed his eyes.  He was sure that there hadn’t been any trees there a moment ago.

The pair walked in silence for a few minutes.  They both enjoyed the warmth of the sun and felt happy to be together again after the last few months apart.  Then Chris noticed the shadows that were moving along the ground in front of them.  He looked up quickly to try to figure out what was making the strange shadowy shapes.

“Um, Alex,” he whispered.  “What are those big flying things up there?”

“Oh yes,” Alex answered quietly, “I forgot to mention the dragons.”

Reviews from Amazon

Really, there are so few books geared for boys these days, this was quite refreshing to read. Two boys, best friends, find a website that transports them to another land, Distania, where they meet Arthur, a young prince a little magic, and, dare I say it?...Dragons!! ~ Donna Dillon

I'm writing this on behalf of my 9 yr old son. In his words: I really enjoyed this book. It had a wicked storyline. While I was reading it I was imagining it was me & my best friend.~ Phil

Author bio

D.X. Dunn is an avid reader who has allowed her love of books to spill over into writing. Reading is a vital life skill for children to develop and she started the Distania Chronicles in an effort to get more books out there that boys could read and enjoy. (Because she is the mom of a boy.) The books have developed to include strong female characters as well. (Because she is the mom of a girl, too.)

There are two more books in the The Distania Chronicles! Amazon

Amazon Review:

I felt the author did an excellent job of capturing the disjointed and often contradictory thought process an addict uses to justify his/her addiction, while at the same time offering a powerful resolution about the power of human connection to transcend the past. A well thought out and deeply personal account that offers a surprising twist that will keep you guessing to the end! ~ Carla Davis

Ixeos Rebellion by Jennings Wright

ixeos rebIxeos Rebellion

With rebel leader Darian free at last, the humans and outsiders on Ixeos must find a way to join forces and defeat the Firsts. The problem? All slaves are tracked with GPS, the Firsts are the only ones with power, and roving gangs hate the rebels just as much as they hate the aliens.

As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs.

As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they're pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

Amazon * Barnes & Noble

The tunnel felt damp as they stepped through the portal. Lindsey held the torch out in front of her, turning in both directions. There were small puddles of water on the floor; the rounded walls wept in places. The tracks looked rusty.
“Great,” Clay muttered. “Are you sure this place isn’t going to collapse on us?”
“Nope. With no one maintaining it, it will eventually,” Lindsey said.
“I wonder what happens to the portal if this side is underwater?” Sarah asked, pulling her arms tight across her chest and shivering.
“I guess we don’t get back to Boston, at least this way” Riley said.
“But could we still come through the portal, and then drown?” Sarah asked. She was feeling claustrophobic as she thought about the weight of the water above her. “Or, what if we’re walking through it and the walls crack…”
“Let’s hope that doesn’t happen!” Lindsey said, heading left. “At least if it floods while we’re in the city, we can get back home from New York or DC.”
“Remind me to come inspect the motorcycles,” Clay said. He and Samson had been in charge of all the Depots that housed motorcycles in Europe, but Samson had handled the others himself. Until he died. Clay shook his head to rid himself of the memory. Best not to think of that right now, in the circumstances.
“Gangs don’t use this tunnel much because of the water, so that’s good for us. The line goes all the way to Revere Beach that way…” Lindsey pointed behind them. “It’s a long way, but it’s nice out there and people used to go to hunt or fish. Not so much now. Everybody is afraid of the tunnel collapsing; the rebels don’t come in here at all.”
“Are there rebels near the LRTD that can help us?” Sarah asked.
“I don’t want to get any of them involved until we know more. Crossing over to the Cambridge side is dangerous. We’ve done some minor ops to cause trouble over there, but mostly we observe. There are a lot of Firsts on that side of the bridge.”
The group fell silent, contemplating the inhuman experiments the Firsts were notorious for conducting. Firsts had been in charge of some of the more gruesome human experiments in both Japan and Germany in World War II. Their lack of emotion but insatiable quest for what they called knowledge, along with a large population of slaves at their mercy, had allowed them to continue their “research.”

Rys Rising by Tracy Falbe

Ready for a FANTASTIC adventure?

Try this Epic Fantasy

It is the first book in an awesome series!

Dacian is a young and powerful rys who has been training to enter an elite priesthood. In this scene he suffers an ultimate rejection that will alter the course of his life and the history of all civilizations that he touches.

"The Nebakarz priests flanking Dacian radiated disapproval in thick mental waves that even a human could have felt. Dacian knew that he had behaved badly and more than once. His esteem for law and order that his teaching master had instilled in him seemed no longer sufficient to control his behavior. Willfully he rallied his determination to salvage his education as the priests marched him into the hallowed audience chamber of the Grand Lumin.

The thin elderly tabre male in his red robes looked deceptively weak and benign, but Dacian sensed his immense power.

Dropping to his knees, Dacian said, “Great Grand Lumin, my Master, forgive me.”

The attending priests went to the sides of the Grand Lumin and placed themselves near the hovering crystal orbs. Their stance was defensive, and Dacian cringed in shame.

After a painful silence, the voice of the Grand Lumin cracked out words. “After everything else, you even dare to speak first.” The Grand Lumin then proceeded to harangue Dacian for his impudence and interference at the punishment of the rys female. Respect for authority was paramount in a society composed of magic beings, the Grand Lumin insisted. Dacian’s crime had been doubly wrong because he had done it in public!

Book Genre: Contemporary Romance

You smell delicious; cinnamon, oranges and vanilla. I want a taste.

He didn't wait for my response; he turned me around and took possession of my mouth. His hands held my head, while he devoured my mouth. His body braced me against the refrigerator. His hand slid under my sweater and cupped my breast. Did he moan or me? I think we both did. His hand was on the move again. I unconsciously sucked in my stomach, his hand was able to easily slide down and inside the front of my jeans. Already wet, he slid his finger up and down my sex, all the while seducing me with his mouth. So close, so close… I shuddered and convulsed around his hand. We broke the kiss and I rested my head on his chest.

How long did that take? Five minutes… I'm so easy. God! What was Jake going to think? He lifted his head, slowly removed his hand from my jeans and sucked on his finger, never taking his eyes off me. I guess he liked it.

Studio Relations by Georgie Lee

Vivien Howard hasn’t forgiven Weston Holmes for almost derailing her career five years ago. Female directors in 1930s Hollywood are few and far between, and a man who coasts by on his good looks and family connections can’t possibly appreciate what it took for her to get to where she is. But when the studio head puts Weston in charge of overseeing Vivien’s ambitious Civil War film, she realizes she has a choice: make nice with her charismatic new boss or watch a replacement director destroy her dream.

Weston Holmes doesn’t know much about making movies, but he knows plenty about money. And thanks to the Depression, ticket sales are dangerously low. The studio can’t afford a flop—or bad press, which is exactly what threatens to unfold when an innocent encounter between Weston and Vivien is misconstrued by the gossip rags. The only solution? A marriage of convenience that will force the bickering duo into an unlikely alliance—and guide them to their own happy Hollywood ending.

Book Genre: Historical Romance

"Earl tossed the paper with the photograph on his desk. “It’s one thing for a single woman to direct a film, and quite another for her to spend the night at a single man’s house.”

“I was only there because I was sick.” Vivien sank down on the couch, dropping her head in her hands. “I can’t believe this is happening. What am I going to do?”

“I know what you’ll do.” Earl sat back, a proud smile on his pudgy face. “You’ll get married.”

“What?” Vivien’s head popped up. “To whom?”

“To Weston, of course.”

Weston and Vivien exchanged horrified looks.

“Are you mad?” Vivien jumped to her feet. “We’ll kill each other.”

“Well, you’d better learn to live with each another because I don’t see how you’re going to come out of this with your reputation intact unless you get married.”

“Now, wait just a minute, Uncle Earl. Let’s not do anything hasty,” Weston cautioned, but Earl shook his head.

“You got her into this mess; you can get her out.” Earl picked up the phone. “Jenny, get me Eve in wardrobe and Ben in props. I’ll also need Lou from publicity. Get them on the phone at once.”

“We can’t get married,” Vivien protested, realizing Earl was serious.

“It won’t be a real marriage. Judge Paxton, he’s a friend of mine. We golf together and he owes me a favor.” Earl picked up the phone. “Hotel 550,” he said to the operator. He kept the phone loosely pressed to his ear as he waited for Judge Paxton and continued to explain his harebrained scheme. “He’ll give us a wedding license and do the ceremony today. Only we’ll have him date it for yesterday. Once the movie is finished shooting and it’s a hit at the box office, we’ll get Judge Paxton to get you a nice, tidy annulment.”

Weston took a deep breath, responding in a measured tone. “Earl, it isn’t that simple. My mother has expectations. My lawyers have expectations.”

“Are you saying I’m not good enough to marry?” Vivien demanded, insulted.

“I’m saying I can’t get married on a whim.”

“This time you’ll have to or it’ll be your reputation on the line too.” Earl pointed a fat finger at Weston. “What do you think the Hays Office will say about morality in Hollywood if the people in charge are seen to have lax morals?”

“The Hays Office isn’t worried about me,” Weston scoffed.

“Come here.” Earl hung up the phone and waved Weston forward, then threw one arm around his shoulders and led him to the window. “Think about Vivien,” he said in a low voice that Vivien strained to hear. “If you don’t do this, you’ll walk away with only a few little problems but it’ll ruin Vivien’s life. Not only will she lose her livelihood, but society will knock her down faster than you can spit. Now, the three of us know what happened last night and we can tell the press all about it, but it won’t matter to women like Mabel McGrath. So think about that before you say no.”"

Gage Gilbert is an eleven-year-old boy who has autism, loves Halloween, and has no friends. Although he has always been happy with the safety and security of his family, he longs for a real friend and adventure - not just the ones he makes up in his head. Then, he meets Eve.

Eve is a young witch from another world called Grimsley Hollow. It's where all magical beings live in safety and peace, but their world is in trouble. Gage is the only one who can help save them from an evil witch who has taken control.

With Eve's help (along with a sarcastic pixy, a trouble-making werewolf, and a half-vampire), Gage travels to Grimsley Hollow. Together, they begin a journey that will change them all. It's a dangerous race against evil, where creatures unheard of stalk the land under a harvest moon and monsters that only exist in dreams become real.

Gage wanted friends and adventure, but he had no idea they would come at such a dangerous price. Can one autistic boy defeat an evil witch and help save his new friends? Travel to Grimsley Hollow and find out!

Grimsley Hollow is the home of all the magical creatures who once lived on Earth. Evil forces are trying to take over this realm, and destroy the peace and respect which has existed between different races. Eve, a young witch, records in her journal the events which lead them to seek the one person who can help them survive: The Chosen One.

For ages 12 – 120 A story that proves not all superheroes wear a cape. Grimsley Hollow is under attack again. Is Inari is trying to seize the Key of Opa and take control of all the magical people and fantastic creatures who live there or is she under the power of someone even more insidious, greedy and evil? Nazar has kidnapped Siren, a young Werewolf, hoping to draw out his family and friends, especially the thirteen year old autistic boy who holds the Key. Nazar has aligned himself with groups of werewolves and other creatures who have broken from the rule of peaceful Queen Aradia, and now believes he's invulnerable to any tricks or spells that would protect the Key. Nazar doesn't realize there is nothing stronger than the bond of friendship, nothing more enduring than the ties of family, and nothing more powerful than a boy who has discovered his own self worth and the magic that comes with believing in himself.
